I watched Where The Wild Things Are last night and it was okay. Not great like i had hoped. The trailers did a good job of selling it. Visually, it was stunning. Dialogue could have been worked on a bit more. It made me wonder how much Spike Jonze had to change his film after WB rejected his original cut.
...This music video on the hand is great.

If i had to listen to one artist for the rest of my life it would be El-P.
I had my itunes on random and a new song of his from The Def Jux Presents 4 album came on. It didn't hit me right away. He never does. His music isn't easy to listen.
It's dense, coarse, and violent. Not in the sense of say metal or gangster rap. It's frantic. Time is running out. The world is ending and the time is now. Things need to be said, deeds need to be done. It's space music. We all live in giant satellites, colonies that house the last of our kind. Steel grinding and twisting with flesh clenched is the sound that fills the air. Work to live. All has become utilitarian. It what makes sense.
Thats what i tell people when i try to describe the way he sounds. When he talks it makes sense to me. His production is robotic, the sample he uses are left field curve ball throw you for a loop obscure. He uses just enough bass to sit in between dub and hyper-dub. I have to work to like this music but when it clicks, oh the joy. It feels as if its my own. Something I see that no one sees.
This particular track How To Serve Man (The Meanest Things I'd Never Say) is a bit more palatable that most of his other work. What caught me on this song was first the excerpt from the twilight zone at the very start. Then the robot. then what sounds like howling? The bridge on this is mean (in a good way). His lyrics are intense as always. He has a bunch of good lines in this. my favorite is probably the very first thing he says.
"thats not a hand its a claw"

Paranormal Activity

I'm not really a fan of horror movies. They just don't do it for me. Most feel contrived and so over the top that the movie becomes one big joke. If I want to laugh, I will watch a comedy.
Yesterday I felt like watching a movie so i asked a friend of mine if he'd be interested in watching one. I suggested Paranormal Activity since its halloween and all. For some reason, I confused this movie with another film that is coming out called The Fourth Kind. I had seen the trailer for The Fourth Kind and I remembered seeing Milla Jovovich interviewing some people and seeing them bug out and start levitating and what not. What i didn't remember was the name of the movie. So I went into the theater thinking I was going to get was Milla Jovovich and her fine self but instead i got Paranormal Activity. -_-
Big mistake. I didn't realize I missed up until half-way through the movie. I kept holding out and thinking, "OKAY. WHERE THE FUCK IS MILLA JOVOVICH. THIS IS NOT RIGHT. WHY AM I WATCHING THIS. OH. MY. GOD. UH..WHAT WAS THAT"
I had no idea what Paranormal Activity was about. That shit scared me.... At one point in the movie i got the chills. Thats never happen to me ever. I haven't been that scared since the beginning of Look Who's Talking.
We exited the film and we just stood outside the movie theater in silence for a good 5 minutes. My friend was pretty disturbed. To say that the movie didn't bother me as well would be a lie.
I think what scared me was the fact that i didn't know what i was getting myself. Another thing was the way the movie would lower your guard making light of the situation that the characters were in giving you the idea that everything was okay. Then some scary shit would happen. Then it'd would be back to "everything is just fine." Then back to the "WTF was that!" Everything came in waves and as the movie went on the waves got bigger. The gap between to amount of normalcy to supernatural widened. It other words, consonance and dissonance.
it didnt bother me enough to keep me from sleeping though. I actually slept quite well. strange.
